FEELING TRIGGERED? TRIGGER POINTS & MASSAGE
PFP massage therapist Jason Bye will explain trigger point therapy to help you understand a little of what it is and why it might be good for you.
Have you heard of trigger points?
Some places you may have heard about trigger point therapy are from a physical therapist, doctor, chiropractor, or other alternative health care practitioner. But what even are trigger points?
Trigger points form in the muscle and can feel like a knot, a nodule or it can feel like an area of hyper-irritability. You will sometimes have referred sensation when this area is touched, such as when your massage therapist presses on your upper traps and you feel it in your jaw or down the arm. That is just one example that you might feel when receiving this technique.
Why would I want to receive this type of massage?
If you are somebody who has chronic pain, this may be a great tool for you. Other reasons you might want to receive this type of massage are having overly tight muscles or no longer having your full range of motion when doing a certain movement at the gym or throughout your daily routine.
Who can benefit from trigger point massage?
Really, anybody who has tight muscles. This type of massage work can benefit runners, athletes, manual labor workers, and people who work at a desk. One benefit that you might get from this technique is a decrease in the sensation of pain. You may also find it easier to move and/or have more freedom in your movement, because those tight muscles prevent you from reaching your full range of motion.
What does it feel like to receive trigger point therapy?
Receiving the work can feel like the therapist is being very specific, because this work is more about focusing on one muscle versus other techniques that focus on broader areas.
