COMMUNITY & INCLUSIVITY: WHY IT MATTERS
We often talk about a fitness community here at the Pittsburgh Fitness Project. But what does that really mean? Why does it matter?
Community
Webster’s Dictionary defines community as “a unified body of individuals.”
But community means different things to different people. For our members at PFP, it usually means a group of people with a common interest - fitness - striving towards a common goal - getting healthier. But why is community so important now more than ever? In a world where it’s easy to disconnect from others and retreat into social media, the internet, or electronic entertainment, more people are feeling lonely.
According to the CDC, 1 in 3 adults report loneliness. And research shows that social isolation leads to more physical and mental health problems. But the good news is that we can establish communities in different ways: fitness groups or gyms, churches, neighborhood groups, book clubs - they all provide social and emotional support and interaction that are vital to healthy living.
Inclusivity
So why talk about inclusivity with community? Inclusivity means including all types of people in a group setting and treating them equally, especially those who might otherwise be marginalized. As part of our community here at PFP, we strive to be inclusive and provide a welcoming environment for anyone who walks through our doors.
