WHAT THE HECK IS A GPP FOUNDATION?
And Why You Probably Need One…
If you’ve ever set a fitness goal and immediately jumped to “I want abs / a marathon / a 500-lb deadlift”, let me introduce you to the unsung hero of long-term progress: the GPP foundation.
GPP stands for General Physical Preparedness, which is a fancy way of saying:
“Can your body actually handle training… or is it barely holding together?”
But What Does It Mean?
A GPP foundation is about becoming generally good at moving. Not elite. Not specialized. Just solid.
Think:
You can walk, run, push, pull, squat, hinge, and carry things without pain.
Your heart doesn’t panic after one flight of stairs.
You recover well and don’t feel wrecked after every workout.
You can train consistently without collecting injuries like Pokémon.
Basically, it’s the fitness equivalent of building a house on concrete instead of sand.
When people set a yearly goal around GPP, they’re saying:
“I want to get strong enough, fit enough, and mobile enough that future goals don’t break me.”
It’s not flashy.
It won’t win Instagram likes.
But it will make everything you do later easier, safer, and way more effective.
So if this year’s goal is “build a GPP foundation,” congrats — you’re playing the long game. And that’s where real progress lives
Everyone wants abs, a PR, or a marathon medal…
But first? Build the base
GPP = General Physical Preparedness
AKA:
Move well
Get generally strong
Improve endurance
Stay injury-free
Train consistently
It’s not flashy — but it’s the reason future you can actually handle the hard stuff
Build the foundation. Then chase the goals.
