TRAINING AS THINGS CHANGE
“You can’t train 10 times a week anymore.”
That’s what my trainer at PFP, Caleb, kept telling me. Of course, I didn’t want to hear it. I wanted to work out, run, and take classes like I was 29, instead of my actual age - 59.
I have been active my entire life. In the days before video games and the internet, I was outside exclusively during the summer months and even spent a lot of time in the winter sledding or throwing snowballs at my neighbors.
In my early years…
I started running competitively in junior high school and continued racing through high school and into college.
But in my 40’s, running became tougher. I developed an arrhythmia common in men over 80 called atrial fibrillation, or afib. My cardiologist said my early presentation was due to years of endurance training as an athlete.
Then, in my 50’s, came arthritis in my knees.
Despite these typical aging issues…
I have continued to strength train and take classes. I’ve probably been in better overall shape in my later years than when I ran almost exclusively.
After 15 years of personal training, I decided this year to become a certified personal trainer so I could help people to improve and maintain their functional strength as they age.
