Summer is a great time to be outdoors and escape those dreary Pittsburgh winters. But the summer season also benefits our mental health. Let’s look at some ways you can use the summer season to literally brighten your day.

Sunshine

Sunlight improves your mood by elevating serotonin levels.  Serotonin is a brain chemical that regulates sleep, mood, and digestion. Just 10 – 30 minutes of sunshine each day can improve your sense of wellbeing. But make sure you wear sunscreen when going outside!

Exercise

It’s easier to get outside in the summer to get in some fitness. And exercise has known benefits for mental health.  Why does that happen?

  • Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, improving our response to stress.

  • Improved fitness increases self-esteem.

  • Group exercise or exercising with a friend can provide social interaction. Research shows that people with social connectedness have better overall health and less depression.

Opportunities for Relaxation

Summer naturally offers opportunities for relaxation and self-care. Whether it’s a beach vacation or just time spent reading a book outdoors, enjoy the chance to recharge and spend time with friends and family.

Other Summer Tips

Other mental health tips to remember for the summer include the following.

  1. Keep a routine schedule.

  2. Keep hydrated and avoid heat stress.

  3. Limit screen time and spend time outdoors.

  4. Have fun but give yourself time to recharge.

  5. Eat a balanced diet with the occasional treat at parties or outdoor events.

Busy schedules can be fun but overwhelming at times. Exercises like  deep breathing or meditation can help. But remember to seek professional help if you feel you need it.
