FOOD INSECURITY & OUR PFP FOOD DRIVE
Every year, the Pittsburgh Fitness Project hosts a food drive in support of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
This year, this food drive will become even more important as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits will become unavailable for families in need.
Let’s look at what food security is and how you can help.
Food Insecurity
So exactly what is food insecurity? Simply put, food insecurity means you have limited or uncertain access to enough food to meet your family’s needs. Food insecurity can lead to skipped meals or not eating at all for a day.
It’s estimated that about 13% of people in southwestern Pennsylvania experience food insecurity.
Food insecurity has many consequences, especially for children. These include:
- Trouble focusing in school
- Decreased productivity at work
- Mental health declines
- Developmental problems in children
How You Can Help
You can take several steps to help your community address food insecurity.
- Donate food to your local food bank. Check with the food bank to see what items are most needed before donating.
- Volunteer your time at a food bank or pantry.
- Make a monetary donation.
PFP will be launching our food drive with our Halloween Boot Camp on Saturday, November 1st at 9:30 AM. Bring a canned food or other non-perishable food item for donation.
You can also drop food off in one of our donation boxes in the gym’s entryway through November 20th. We’ll take donations to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank after that time.
We appreciate your help with our annual drive!
